Rabbi Mathew D. Michaels is the founding spiritual leader of the Northwest Houston Chavurah. He served congregations in
Brownsville, TX, Evansville, IN, Houston and Spring, TX before the formation of NWHC in 2005. He also served as the Interim Executive Director of the Hillel Foundation for Greater Houston and Interim Rabbi of Temple Emanuel, Beaumont, TX. Our rabbi earned a B.A. in Political Science from the
University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1974, a Master’s of Hebrew Letters from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, Los Angeles and was ordained from HUC-JIR, Cincinnati in 1980. In 2005 HUC-JIR bestowed the title of Doctor of Divinity, Honoris Causa in recognition of his 25th anniversary in the rabbinate. During his 20 years in the
Houston area, Rabbi Michaels has been very active in the Jewish community. He is past president of the Southwest Association of Reform Rabbis (SWARR) and the Houston Rabbinic Association. He has served on the boards of several major Jewish organizations including: AJC, Jewish Family Service, JCC, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston. Rabbi Michaels is the proud father of Mara (and her husband Daniel), Marty, Mindy and Benji.
